Introducing… The Melbourne Sessions
Grammy-winning R & B producer Warryn Campbell will be joined by international hitmaker Shungudzo and local talents Ben Abraham, Jen Cloher and more to teach and inspire music’s next wave.
Songwriters, composers and producers with global hits and beloved anthems to their credit will lead The Melbourne Sessions, a unique, one day only event of masterclasses, workshops and networking opportunities for emerging and mid-career songwriters.
The Melbourne Sessions, presented by APRA AMCOS and the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, will be held Friday 6 July at Kindred Studios in Yarraville, with tickets on sale from 17 April.
In today’s ultra-competitive, super-connected music industry, the art of songwriting remains an essential and enduring skill, which is why APRA AMCOS and Creative Victoria have partnered to present a day covering multiple areas of musical interest and song craft, as well as opportunities for participants to build their local and international networks.
LA-based Grammy-winning writer/producer Warryn Campbell, who has worked with Alicia Keys, Kanye West, and Missy Elliott among others, will go deep into songwriting and the business of it in an In Conversation for all attendees.
With co-writes in the last year for The Chainsmokers, Little Mix and Jessie Ware, and her own track Long Live the Billionaire premiered on Beats1 and added to triple j, US-via-Zimbabwe songwriter and solo artist Shungudzo is confirmed to lead a masterclass; as are producer Anna Laverty, singer-songwriter Ben Abraham and renowned film and TV composer Cezary Skubiszewski.
Abraham, co-writer of Kesha’s Grammy-nominated smash Praying, says, “I am stoked to have the chance to lead a masterclass for The Melbourne Sessions. I grew up around songwriting and am super passionate to share everything I know about the craft with anyone who will listen.”
Workshops will see smaller, specialised groups get hands-on experience with the likes of Jen Cloher, Adalita, Joelistics and more, with the day culminating in a curated performance and post-event networking.
“As one of Australia’s fastest growing export industries, a career path in songwriting or composing has never been more viable, which is why we are partnering with Creative Victoria to further advance the artistic and economic potential in the field,” says Jana Gibson, APRA AMCOS’ Director of Writer Services.
Professional development sessions for screen composers across film, TV, and the ever-growing video game genre are also being specially programmed to help expand composers’ business and creative networks and develop the community.
